CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Last night took me by surprise with how much I enjoyed modelling. I didn’t expect my photos to turn out well, but hopefully, they’d be good enough for the agency. Already, I’d caught a sneak preview of Isabel’s, and not only did she look beautiful, but also amazingly photogenic. I sent Isabel a quick message, to thank her for last night. With my keys and phone tucked away in my jacket pocket, I tied up my laces and stepped out into the crisp morning air. To cure my jadedness from last night, I opted for a jog around the park. Twenty minutes later, on the second circuit, my calf muscle cramped. In agony, I sat on the park bench and massaged the back of my leg. My phone vibrated in my pocket to alert me to a text.

Although Isabel had responded quickly, the message didn’t arrive until now. Under my breath, I cursed as I’d missed out on an invitation to view the photos at the studio. I sent her a reply, with an explanation about the poor phone signal. Within seconds, my mobile rang. ‘Can you come over now? Gerald is out for the rest of the day on a photo shoot, but said he’s still got time to show you the pictures this morning,’ Isabel said.

I glanced at the reflection on the phone’s screen. Sweat trickled down my face, and my hair hung wild and unkempt. I stank to high heaven due to sweating. I explained this to Isabel.

‘Don’t worry about that. Just make your way over. Sarah stayed out late last night, so you're not the only one in need of a wash.’

‘Bloody cheek,’ Sarah said in the background.

The other side of the park stopped near Gerald’s studio, so I stretched my calf muscles before I sprinted off towards the exit. Ten minutes later, I arrived at the studio and Sarah greeted me. ‘Coffee, darling?’ she asked. I nodded. The lingering aroma of coffee and pastry invaded my senses, and my stomach growled in response. ‘Fancy coffee with a croissant?’ Sarah smiled. It wasn’t my breakfast of choice; however, I wouldn’t let my hunger pangs embarrass me in front of Isabel. Sarah led me to the back of the studio, where an office hid behind a door. Gerald and Isabel sat in conversation, and something he said made her fall into fits of giggles.

She composed herself and pointed to the empty chair next to her. ‘Hi, Josh. Come and sit next to me so we can get started with the slideshow.’ Gerald clicked a button on the keyboard and an image of me appeared on a twenty-seven-inch iMac. I scanned the room and saw nothing but smiles. Gerald looked especially pleased with himself, so I sat back in my chair and relaxed. For certain, he’d done me justice, and the mood lighting complimented my looks.

‘Stop there,’ Sarah said. ‘Does anyone else think Josh looks like that actor who plays Thor?’

‘Chris Hemsworth?’ Isabel asked. ‘He’s lush and my favourite celebrity crush.
